It's been a long time since I've one starred an album, let alone a death metal album. Usually, I demo an album before I buy but after listening to Dawn of Possession I just simply assumed this piece was good. It wasn't. This is one of the more severely overrated albums I've come across becuase I really don't understand why people like this so much. The sound quality is too thick, the guitars don't have enough volume and the riffs have all these strange and unlikeable chords in them. It has no atmosphere ...

Immolation's "Close to a World Below" is a complete masterpiece of brutality and technicality. Everything on this album is done in perfect measure. There is no fat, no parts technical for the sake of technicality, no parts needlessly excessive for the sake of attempted brutality (i.e. Cannibal Corpse, Devourment) and no cheap gimmicks or tricks. This is 100% pure, unadulterated death metal from start to finish.

While Immolation's "Close to a World Below" is a deservedly legendary and highly influential DM album, it still maintains a distinct flavor rare to such significant releases. Most metal, and surely virtually all tech-death, has remained totally centered on the riff, while Immolation takes a purer, ...

Immolation should really be considered masters of Death Metal, and while they are quite respected, they fall by the way side of other, perhaps less qualified bands. Though I love Deicide, their anti-Christian lyrics can be a tad too cliche at times, and really don't cause any critical thinking about the said subject matter. Immolation on the other hand actually have lyircs that approach the anti-Christian viewpoint from different perspectives; one song will deal with the supposed return of Christ from a believers ...

Immolation is a death metal band that broke out into the death metal scene in the early 90's, yet they have not been as noticed as their contemporaries Suffocation and Cannibal Corpse. This band would always stay loyal in the death metal underground regardless of any musical fads that would pop up. My personal favorite by this band, "Close To A World Below", is a perfect example of how Immolation does their thing. Ross Dolan is one stand out vocalist whose vocals are in a lower pitch, but you can actually decipher ...
