Editorial Review:
Album Description: Recorded at the legendary Abyss studios by fellow label mate Peter Tagtgren (Hypocrisy), this 2002 release features grim, haunting vocals, crushingly brutal guitar riffs, and pounding bass thunder adding up to a superior black metal album.

Ironically, I found this CD on clearance while killing time with some friends before going to see the black metal documentary "Until the Light Takes us". I'm an elderly 39 year-old who grew up on Celtic Frost & Slayer, but, admittedly, not very big on the modern black metal scene other than some laughable videos on youtube. Needless to say, I was expecting the worse (especially from the cheesy cover image), so when I popped this into my truck's CD player, I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually ...

Immortal are to black metal what the Exploited are to punk rock; the band that embodies every cliche so absolutely as to actually be distinctive. If "Battles In The North" was basically an aural game of D&D, and the musicianship was a little lacking, this is full on Darkon-style combat, complete with costumes, and with some finally tuned shredding. Funny/only till recently I had Dimmu Borgir in my archives/some other sons of the father's of Northern Darkness. Glad I finally heard these guys and this album. GET IT AND TAKE THE PLEASURE TRIP INTO THE WORLD OF TUNDRAROUS RAGE AND GLACIAL MADNESS/AVE-AMEN!

I decided to try out Immortal for the first time, enticed by the prospect of getting this album for free. Boy did I get a deal! I, like many other reviewers I've noticed here, am not typically a fan of Black metal in general.(I do have a thing for Satyricon and some Dimmu Borgir) So what is it about Immortal that draws in so many people that typically aren't huge fans of this genre? The hooks? The song-writing? Just the overall musicianship? I really don't know, but this album has all of that. This album ...

This is the first Immortal album that I bought, but I have been into their music for some time now. My version is the deluxe edition with the live DVD with it, which is amazing too. I must say that this is quite possibly the best Black Metal album in my collection of over 700 CDs. The first song is a great way to open the album, just as brutal as you can get. But nothing can prepare you for track #3..."Tyrants". It is the best song on the album by far, in my opinion...the guitar is played to perfection and ...
