One of Epica's best.Very well written and heavy at the right times.Simone is one of god's finest creations.

If I were to just rate the main vocalist on this album, it would be a solid 5 on every song. However gifted, to my ears she doesn't do enough to make up for the rest of the flaws.
The male vocals are monotonic. Some people might argue that it was a decision to give "a contrast to the beautiful female vocals," however I would say that those vocals need no contrasting whatsoever, and in fact detract from the band's true source of power. These guys simply rock! They're not you're typical gothic band. There are too many metal bands that boasts a female vocalist. However, very few make my list of "Godess" status and is soley based on merit of the singer and the overall quality of music produced. Epica sticks with the same winning formula and the result if pure majestic. The growly male vocals does add a "Beauty and the Beast" contrast to a lovely operatic voice. Well worth the purchase, in my opinion.

I am not sure what Epica is trying to do. The cord structure and mix of metal and opera is great. Simone has a wonderful voice and is clearly well trained. But the growling gets old fast. It is simply too much and ruins the effect of the music. Also there are sections that the machine gun guitars are also over done. These things make the album hard to listen to in one sitting. Do not get me wrong it is still good. Epica has incredible potential. They are al greatly talented. I do wish that ...

This album has alot to offer. Sometimes it seems like they are trying to outdo themselves. If they toned it down a little bit it would be alot better. But its still a really good album. Some of the songs are too long for their own good, and some of the changes in the songs are very abrubt. There is only one guitar solo on the ablum (beyond belief) and the death metal vocals sometimes seemed too forced ( i like death vocals done like how Opeth does them, not so much like epica does them.) But overall ...
