I hate to award only three stars (cuz I really like this band, inconsistent as they are), but this new record is lacking something. Darkane is still like a more technical Swedish version of Strapping Young Lad, they still have killer instrumental work, and their new vocalist isn't too different from Andreas (which is just fine with me). But the songwriting is missing those rifftastic hooks I heard on 'Insanity' and 'Layers'. It's certainly not a bad record, and it may grow on me yet, but right now ...

I kid you not, seriously. It's that good. It may well be their best work to date. Insanely catchy and melodic and yet brutal and ridiculously fast most of the time. Some of the most creative songwriting I have heard in thrash metal. Solos rip off Kirk Hammet's head and crap down his neck. The breaks and passages between verses are worthy of latter era Death or Megadeth's RIP album. The new vocalist gives Darkane a new, fantastic quality. And production? To me, Darkane is one of the few bands that excels at merging insanity and melody together. This is largely due to having Christofer Malmstrom on lead guitar and Peter Wildoer manning the drums. After hearing their debut "Rusted Angel", I've been absolutely hooked. With each release, they've moved sideways in a sense (which Christofer mentions of this release in their video diary). Never moving out of their core sound, but instead injecting something new and twisted.
