Editorial Review:

Album Description:
2009 album from the Norwegian Black Metal heads, one of the most important bands of the genre. For nearly two decades, Immortal have been creating unique, skull-scraping Black Metal, always remaining one step ahead of everyone else. The band has finally found a stable line up with Abbath on guitars/vocals, Horgh on drums, Apollyon on bass and Demonaz still doing the lyrics.

Disc 1:
  1. All Shall Fall
  2. The Rise of Darkness
  3. Hordes to War
  4. Norden on Fire
  5. Arctic Swarm
  6. Mount North
  7. Unearthly Kingdom

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Sure to satisfy the cravings of any fan that began salivating at news of the band's return.
Abbath was recently quoted in Decibel saying: "I always knew Immortal would be back, but I was waiting for the right time to strike." Well, he could have fooled me! 2002's Sons of Northern Darkness seemed like the perfect career bookend album. In a time when the integrity of the black metal scene was in question, that record put a stamp on the genre, in effect saying: "This is how you do this." Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Classic "Immortal" Sound
This album continues with that highly distinctive Immortal sound in the vein of juggernauts such as "At the Heart of Winter" and "Sons of Northern Darkness," and is every bit as good as those two entries in the band's ouevre. Immortal is probably the only black metal band that I can think of that write songs that are actually "catchy" in a weird way. These tracks sort of get into your head and keep re-playing there long after you've put the headphones away.

At first, when I heard the ...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Worth the Wait
7 years off didn't really hurt them at all. Not as brazen & frosty as they used to be, this is a good combo of Sons Of Northern Darkness, At The Heart of Winter & everything else this band represents.
The songwriting is awesome. Guitar playing is quite a great mix of riffs, melody & atmosphere. I just cannot find anything here not to like. Every tune slays, Hordes to War, Arctic Swarm, & title track are my favorites (today) & that changes weekly, always a sign of a great album.
